i find it hard to believe that you would put oldies on, again, on saturday night. it didn't work the
last time you tried it and here we go again. you are a beach music station...not oldies!!! i don't get
what you are thinking.

OK guys- a compromise

If we must have oldies on at nights, drop the Harvey Show when your agreement runs
out and lets at least keep it local!! I'll still listen if we can at least sound like a Myrtle Beach
station! Tks!

Just sitting here up "north" listening to the drive at five and just heard "Most of Those
Pretty Girls" by William Dell and Wee James for the first time and am completely blown away. Is this a
new release or an older song? My family and I are coming to M.B. later in August and when I'm on the
beach every day, that is the "beach sound" I want to hear. Please keep this sound going. I
absolutely love it!!!!

I've just week before last discovered this radio station. Love it!

We just found the "Listen Live" link on your site. AWESOME!! We are from Cherry Grove but now live
in Naples, Florida. We just returned back to NMB last week for a family get-together. Felt good to be home. A
shout out to my fellow Coastal Carolina alumni (class of '89).

JD's song, "Summer Place". I love the song....period. The vocals are professional...and
the
message is priceless.

I think J D has a great voice

Lee, Thanks for your kindness. SummerPlace was released at Fall SOS 1999. I remember there had been a major
Hurricane a couple of days prior to SOS beginning and it rained the whole week. Hwy 9 started flooding about
mid week and no one could leave. I sometimes feel the MESSAGE in the song " Where It May Rain Or Storm I
Lie Safe And Warm In Your Arms" had alot to do with its sucess. There is no storm big enough to keep
shaggers from coming to NMB for SOS. They danced and walked in water all week long. God works in mysterious
ways sometimes. In any event the timing was perfect for the song and it has become my Signature Song after all
these years.

You have a good point, JD. I was also wondering how many people would call into the show to request beach
songs. I understand the show is syndicated, but supposedly, the Mike Harvey show will acclimate itself,
somewhat, to the area. Maybe we should all test it out and see what happens. I certainly don't expect
him to make it into a beach show, but wouldn't it be nice for him to incorporate requests of beach songs
into the show? That would be a wonderful way to introduce beach music to the poor souls that haven't had
the good fortune of experiencing it.

I, as well as Sam, don't know where you came by the term 'Mike Harvey Haters.' That's not
the case, since I don't know Mike personally. I guess I've just been spoiled by being able to hear
great Beach and Shag music anytime I listened to The Surf. Hence, the disappointment.
After reading all of
your comments, I understand the business part of the change and the possibility of getting some new people
listening to beach and shag the next day after listening to oldies the night before. Most importantly, the
comment about listening to Beach and Shag in the daytime and oldies at night versus not having The Surf at
all, hit home. Therefore, I can conform. Thanks for all your 'enlightening' comments.
94.9 is
still "one of a kind!"

Thank You Barbara! Its probally a long shot in the dark, but what would happen if lots of people started
calling the Mike Harvey request line and started requesting some Beach Music? Request songs that were national
hits and charted but refer to them as Beach Music. There are thousands of them. Music by The Temps, The
Chairmen Of The Board, Bill Deal & The Rhondells, The O'Kaysions, Jerry Butler, The Drifters, etc.
Who Knows ? Mike Harvey may get curious and learn something. You never know whats possible.

I'm with you, Butch. Billy is really good at playing some oldies, such as you mentioned. Ted will do
it too, especially if you request it from 12:00 - 2:00. I love those old songs!

Good music is good music! 94.9 The Surf advertises as "The Carolina's Beach Music & Classic
Hits Station". And that is as it should be. Constant beach music, over and over and over, would work on
you. An occasional "classic" hit by a Bobby Rydell or a Jimmy Jones is a welcomed addition to the
listening pleasure.

Now, in that vein, I am not a supporter of playing "oldies" in the vein of
the British groups or music that does not come close to qualifying as even R&B or soul music. I would vote
for not having the Mike Harvey show, but I am more than happy that we have the opportunity to listen to this
great station when they do play the music most folks listen to it for. Keep up the good work 94.9!

JD, unfortunately, corporte America is made up of a generation that is clueless about a lot of music (or what
they call music). Nevertheless, you're right about how the term beach music is used. Those that call
swamp boogie beach music do so because of the beat. They feel if they can shag to it, it's beach music,
which is NOT the case. The blues beat is ideal for shagging, but all blues songs are not really beach music.
Unless people have grown up with it, it's difficult for them to grasp the beginnings and development of
the beach sound. It does encompass a lot of R&B through the years, because the culture started with
R&B. I'd rather listen to R&B/Motown any day over some of the songs considered beach music
today. I'm enjoying seeing more recent groups such as, 58 West and the Daddy O's keeping the beach
sound alive. BTW, Summer Place is my favorite song of all time, and if you want to hear a great CD, JD's
is fantastic.

Sam,Thanks for the kind words about SummerPlace.Ive never really told this before, but one of the reasons
Theme From A SummerPlace was chosen to record is it was a recognizable oldie. After spending a lifetime trying
to explain to people in other areas of the country what Beach Music was and getting nowhere I might add.
Johnny Barker and myself worked for three years trying to do an album of songs that Northerners would
recognize using the Beach Music Sound which nobody can do any better than Johnny Barker. It was he who created
the arrangement. But the hopes and idea was to spread Beach Music thru oldies stations that might play the
song because it was a classic. We also recorded Shangra-La and Smile & Dream in the same mood.
I had
always hoped that some of the Oldies Stations would add Beach Breaks to their formats much like 105 out of
Elizabethtown used to do but Corparate America doesnt seem to be interested.

I had considered the discussion regarding the addition of the Mike Harvey Show over as of Saturday night at
6:00 and would not have posted additional comments. But, since Jay-Jay and JD asked a direct question,
I'll try to explain my thoughts.
The Surf management has made their decision, financial I'm sure,
and I respect their business decisions althouth I am personally disappointed with the change. I'll still
LOVE and support The Surf, just not on Saturday nights. If it were up to me I would have Billy Smith playing
"The Classics and Nothing but the Classics" 24/7; but also love the requests from Ted's show,
and insights to the bands/songs and the energy of Ray. "The Surf at Night" is a great
"finishing touch" to the format. My opinion.

Jay-Jay asked for examples of Beach Music songs.
Often I have tried to explain this to new beach music converts. It's almost easier to say what is not
beach music. Example: The Rolling Stones, "Satisfaction" would probably never be considered beach
music.

With some exceptions (like the Tams and Drifters), individual songs are hard to classify as beach
music, because there is so much cross-over. Being a retired school principal, please allow me to use
educational terms to illustrate my point. I think everyone will be able to relate-
When teachers are
teaching students to read, they not only have to teach kids to recognize indivual words, but more importantly,
the "context" of the words as they are put together in sentences and stories. That is what makes for
good reading. Likewise, individual songs don't make beach music, but rather, played together (along with
a good DJ, club, friends, etc.) make beach music what we have appreciated for 40+ years(Some folks call it a
Life-style).
Example 1: JD stated that he heard Mike Harvey play "Show and Tell." this is a great
song, one of my favorites, but if it is played between The Stones and The Carpenters, it looses context.

Example 2: A few years ago, a talented artist reinvented and sang a beautiful version of "A Summer
Place." (Can't remember his name, :-) ) Prior to JD's release of Summer Place, I doubt anyone
would have classified the origional/previous versions of Summer Place as a beach song. But, with JD's
voice and new arrangement, it "fit the context" of beach music and became a beach music classic.
Believe it was "song of the year????

www.949the surf.com as soon as they get back to the office on Monday morning. The Mike Harvey
show is found simply by dialing in to countless local stations. The Surf is found by folks looking for beach
music.

Final comment- I'm not sure where the Mike Harvey "haters" term came from. To hate
someone, they have to be a part of your thoughts. I assure all, Mike Harvey is not a part of my thoughts,
therefore no hate can be generated. But I confess, I hate the change of The Surf's Saturday night
format... It is on my mind....

Thats A GREAT QUESTION JAY-JAY. Im also interested in hearing the Haters answer your question.
Its a
common
misconception among dancers to believe its not Beach Music unless you can SHAG to it.

"Beach
Music"... pretty much unknown to the world after 40yrs...is kept alive by some really neat folks and
bands around here and I love em all!
When the baby boomers die off it will probably be gone. The clubs are
just about gone to condos and Pop Clubs.. Are there a lot of Beach Music Clubs opening in Myrtle
Beach???...Anywhere? No!
Is Beach Music on the Billboard Charts?
Enjoy it while it lasts and the Club`s real
estate owners in OD keep the clubs open.
They are the real heroes like the Surf Radio has been to this dying
genre. Time R tough but the generation has kept it going...it`s about gone.... sadly. Get used to it.

Its a common
misconception among dancers to believe its not Beach Music unless you can SHAG to it. The Shag is a wonderful
dance but its a dance which can be done to most any kind of music. Beach Music has a specific sound and
feeling which is now very much confusing to the public when so many shaggers are calling Blues & Boogie -
Beach Music. There were alot of SLOW CLASSIC BEACH MUSIC songs by artists such as Billy Stewart, The Dells,The
Impressions,The Four Tops & Temptations, etc. Oldies, Soul & R%B are the roots of the Carolina Beach
Music sound and I still believe that oldies and Beach Music go hand and hand.

I've been reading recent comments here about this Mike Harvey Show "deal." I see some
disappointed, if not plain angry, people. I learned to shag and was introduced to this Carolina Beach Music
"scene" as a senior at USC in '97 so obviously I would be considered a newcomer in comparison
to most of you. My question is, and this pertains mainly to the "Mike Harvey Haters" such as Sam,
Raymond, Donnie and Buck: what exactly makes a song a "Carolina Beach Music" song as opposed to an
oldies, R&B, Motown or even country tune? And can you give a few examples. Thanks for helping.
Peace,
Love and Harps for Everyone!

Okay, I'm about fed up with the so-called Surf fans that continually post deragatory messages about the
Mike Harvey show. I know it's not what some are used to, and yes, the evenings are the only times some
are able to tune into the Surf. Here again, the powers that be at the Surf are not out to ignore their fans,
but as previously stated, while you have the luxury of listening via Internet for free, there is a trade-off.
Wouldn't you rather have the Surf during the day or not at all? I'm sure this wasn't a sudden
decision, and research was done before the move was made. Sometimes, we have to grow up and live with changes
we don't like. I hope those that are passionate about the change during the evening hours are just as
passionate about the shape of this country and what you're going to do about it during election time.
Let's put things in perspective and lay off the Surf!

Sorry, 2 words to describe my feeling about your new sat nite format VERY DISAPPOINTING!! Saturday night was
a wonderful time to hear great beach music but now with Mike Harvey it's just another oldie show which
can be heard on any mediocre radio station anywhere. Bread, Jan&Dean etc are certainly not indicative of
Beach Music. Please rethink your decision as many listeners will certainly gravitate to other stations not only
on Sat night but also during the day as I have when a run of the mill "oldie" is played. GOOD LUCK

It's kind of scary when a station ignores their fans who the station relies on for support of their
advertisers. I love "Beach Music" and that's about it. We have at least two oldies stations
around Lexington, however I listen to the Surf. After 7:00PM., I guess I will be listening to one of their
local competitors. I guess "listeners" don't mean much to the Surf hierarchy.

I understand the Mike Harvey showed actually did very well when it was broadcast on a Myrtle Beach station
before they went country. I think JD is correct in that this is an avenue in which to introduce "beach
music" to more of the masses that visit/relocate to the area. It is ingrained in us from the Carolinas,
but others are clueless until they have experienced it. I constantly read messages from those from all over
the country that have grown to enjoy what we've known all along. If the Mike Harvey show is a tool in
which to introduce people to the flavor of beach music, then so be it. I have enough CDs to satisfy me if I
don't want to listen to it. Hopefully, it will serve as a tool to have people buying more CDs and
supporting the beach music artists.

I like The Mike Harvey show.I love the Surf seems like a great fit.I know this will surprise some of the die
hard fans out there ,But as been pointed many time on this Board. If The Radio Stations,Artist,Song Writers in
Beach Music depended on the die hard beach fans to make a living,,we would starve.I think the Harvey show will
help all involved in Beach Music. The Surf has to do what it can to stay alive. How many of you that live

JD makes a good point. I already had some beach music CDs, but once I was turned on to the Surf and was
re-aquainted with beach music, I started purchasing mostly beach music CDs. Remember, I live in Atlanta where
nobody knows what beach music is, so I had lost track for awhile, but am now an avid listener. I have to
admit, I do love a lot of the R&B musice from the '50s through the '80s, so oldies isn't a
totally bad thing.

One other thought Ive had on this Mike Harvey matter is the fact that a HUGE PERCENTAGE of the Myrtle Beach
Population are northerners who have migrated south to Myrtle Beach for a better life. They were raised on
Doo-Wop & Oldies. If they can hear their oldies on the Surf, they will also hear our Carolina Beach Music.
Oldies and Beach Music go hand and hand.
The Surf has never been a 100 percent Beach Music staion to begin
with. They play a good mix of Carolina Beach Music as well as Blues, Boogie,Soul,Motown & Shag Music.
Whats wrong with adding classic oldies to reach more people and broaden the Beach Music audience? Tunnel
Vision is a terrible thing and its one of the reasons Beach Music has remained the Best Kept Secret In
America.
I listened to the Mike Harvey show tonight on my way to work and heard "Show & Tell"
by Al Wilson, "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder & Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet , just to mention a
few. These were all major, well produced hits that have stood the test of time and will surely draw a larger
audience of listners to the station who will also hear Carolina Beach Music on a regular basis. Its a WIN-WIN
situation. For those die hard people complaining, its only a few hours a night. Im sure that you serious
Carolina Beach Music Fans have bought massive amounts of your favorite beach music on CDs. You always have the
option of enjoying the CDs you have bought and paid for during the Mike Harvey show if you are unhappy with
the program. The new music you hear on the Surf is availible for sale at all your favorite Beach Music outlets
and will play on your PC as well as your home stereo or car player. Whats the Problem?

JD is right.
The Surf combining the Harvey Show with Beach Music should increase their listenership and
bring in more revenue. I think the Surf donates a lot of their resources to promote Beach Music. Those whining
about them doing what they have to do to survive is like the clubs talking about the Beach Music dancer that
buys 1 beer.. dances all night to the band and leaves instead of spending some money to help the club survive.
