To Michael Jumper,
It seems I remember a big controversy regarding the voting on the CBMA with regards to
the Coastline band in their earlier days. Maybe JD could refresh us on what went on with that. I don`t
remember much about it but heard about some kind of fuss. Did they fix all that?
Thanks in advance.

Billy Ray,

Please note that the awards presented by the CBMAs were based on votes by people who care
enough about the industry to join the organization and VOTE!!! Each member is enitled to a vote (AKA an
opinion). No artists or bands were shafted. The bands that reach the people were recognized by the VOTE,
thus the awards.

We consider members of many of the bands mentioned in the previous e-mail entries to be
our friends and we venture out to support these bands on a regular basis. Many FANS of all the bands will
tell you the most fun part of the performance is when the band performs THEIR MUSIC. It is what makes them
special. It's why we go to see Sea Cruz, CWB, The Fantastic Shakers, The Holiday Band, The Band of Oz,
and Coastline. This just touches the surface of the many, many artists and bands out there that work hard to
entertain us week after week.

Unlike you, many members of the bands listed above have been to a Coastline
Show. And members of Coastline have been out to support those bands,,, because it a family!! It's what
families do, we suport one another!!. Many times I have seen members of bands invited to get on stage with
Coastline and perform during a show. Coastline artists have been invited to perform on stage with the other
bands. Egomaniacs DO NOT voluntarily share the spotlight.

We love the music of all the bands. They all
have something to contribute to the BEACH MUSIC MIX, but right now Coastline seems to be catching the negative
"HEAT".

Coastline, through many hours of hard work and much talent have developed a style and
line-up of original music that practically fills their show, with requests to REPEAT some of 'their
songs'. Many of which they can't fit into the evening. They give all they have and always leave
the crowd wanting more. They have not forgotten where they started and have not lost sight of where they
want to go. They embrace their friends (aka fans for the smaller minded people). Not only do the
'friends' have a great time at the show but it is obvious that the band enjoys what they do.
That's what makes it "COASTLINE TIME".

Thanks to all you guys for being true to yourselves
and therefore giving us the best you can be!!

We love you all,

Michael and Pam

Folks on here discussing the Coastline Band.
I heard the Coastline song Turn me Over today.
Neat song but I
wonder how Jim Quick made it this far smoking Lucky Strikes, chugging all that Mad Dog wine and beer, and
smoking all that wacky weed.
He wants to go back and do all that over he might not make it through again.

I like that song though.

Thank You for the kind words Barbara & Ruth Anne. I appreciate it. The older I get I find I have less
time to worry about some peoples negative comments. As the late comedian Richard Pryor used to say, " IF
THERE WERE BLUE PEOPLE ON EARTH, SOMEBODY WOULD HATE THEM " Ive had my share of Ups & Downs in the
music business just like everyone else has, but its all Ive ever done and Ive been doing it full time for 43
years. Yes its true that I DJ at 2001 as a regular job which I enjoy very much, but I still sing at a few
clubs & do private singing engagements and special events as well as performing with an 18 piece orchestra
occasionally when the budget is there. There are many many facets to the music business and they are all a big
part of a bands success such as promotion, booking agents, etc. I still enjoy recording and performing, but Im
tired of driving all over the United States week after week. Ive always been fond of Myrtle Beach and the
people who come here year after year since Working the Holiday Inns here back in 1974. Back in those days when
we would get a weeks vacation from our road schedule, I would always come here to relax. My Sinatra Act does
well in Florida for the SNOWBIRDS and I still perform in the Keys occassionally, but I was born and raised in
the Carolinas and theres NO PLACE LIKE HOME !

Thank You....JD CASH

Hey Billy Ray my friend !!!!!
Thank you for researching and sharing the CBMA Awards Mission Statement.
Did
I see the words OFFSHOOTS and say it ain't so..... CAROLINA LIFESTYLE ????? hmmmmmm

Thanks Ruth
Anne,
I guess "offshoots" of CBM could include a lot of variants as long as the songs relate to CBM
in some way. Including Swamp Boogie as long as they sing about anything related to CBM and/or have a
"shaggable" beat.

Maybe someone will someday get a CBMA for a Rap/Shag song at 118-120
BPMSmile
Maybe it will appeal to the younger shaggers...I`m sure Jimmy Q. could write one.
LOLSmile

I have
discovered on here that my preference is the "real" Carolina Beach Music "bubblegum
stuff..(thank you JD) for explaining that.
Maybe some new songs will come out soon in that style.

For all of those that are unfamiliar with JD Cash, you should go to his website and listen to some of his
music. JD is from my hometown in NC. He was with the Castaways when they were developing and playin true
beach music. He's known to be a great entertainer. That comes from a next door neighbor I grew up with
that has played in music since he was a teenager. JD is only explaining how the industry works. I don't
believe he has disagreed with the real issue that Billy Ray brought up, just trying to educate and give us an
insight as to the business end of things. While I don't always agree with what some people are calling
beach music, please don't insinuate that JD doesn't know what he's talking about. He has a
plethora of knowledge that we lay people out here are unaware of.

BTW, I love what some call the
"bubblegum" beach, as that's what I loved growing up. I'd love to hear some bands write
more of it.

Thanks JD Cash for your post on "Carolina Beach Music" some shaggers call "bubblegum."
I
am a fan of that music.
Jim Quick`s opinion of Carolina Beach Music as "lifestyle" I don`t quite
understand.
I agree with what you said, and what Fessa Hook discribes in his book. Quick did say he wasn`t a
Carolina Beach Music Band yet he won several Carolina Beach Music Awards.
In trying to fit all this together
would I be correct to say: Quick puts his "non Beach Music" to a shaggable beat, (as Brian
said)promotes it in this genre by playing the Beach Clubs, and the listners and dancers here accept it. Result
being: that you DO NOT have to write Carolina Beach Music to win Carolina Beach Music Awards.
So a Cammy like
a Grammy is an award for ALL genres and styles of songs?

from the Cammy homepage:
The mission of the CBMA
Awards is to promote Carolina Beach Music, its influences and offshoots and the unique Carolina lifestyle by
the presentation of a first class awards show...

Anyone discussing Carolina Beach Music and thinking JD Cash is just a Dj at 2001 is really kind of funny !!!
I don 't know jack about promotion, recording etc. etc. I know I love ALL of this music and like learning
about it. JD has lived it and any and all insight and information he gives I most certainly consider a
valuable "expert" opinion. And I'm sure many others agree.

and JD, since some folks (while
they have a right) seem to get some sort of pleasure voicing negative opinions, let me take the oportunity to
tell you that You ARE the freaking Frank Sinatra of beach music !!!! You have a beautiful smooth voice that I
love to hear. I am always thrilled when bands invite you up on stage to sing. It's always a treat !! I
look forward to it and hope for it when I see you in the crowd. Now here's the funny part , until
recently, I didn't know you were a Dj at 2001 !!!! Go figure !!!!!

Wow! Not only can beach folks dance barefoot in the sand...we have valid opinions. I agree with JD and the
great song by the Tams. I picture the super memories of dancin' to that one on the beach after a day of
surfin'. Loved holding my girl's hand and a Bud.
I do think two excellent beach bands who survived
this thread deserve to be mentioned in a positive way: The Embers and The Band of Oz.
No matter what genre
people feel this music falls into, in fact, I don't care if you call it
'Sand Music', Sunburn
Music, or Old Stuff, it's the best. I define it as happy, positive, great beat stuff, and so-ooo much fun
to listen, sing along with, and dance to.
As a drummer, I know good music...and we have good music down
here...so, let's keep enjoyin' it, and give credit and thanks to all of the fine musicians
performing it for us...
From Sandbridge Beach, I send sandy high-fives to all of you guys and girls...keep
smilin'...Lee

To Rob Dee from Macbee....Rob, I used to record in Nashville at Acuff-Rose Studios which was owned by the
late Roy Acuff because my Producer at the time was Alan Moore , a Nashville based Producer but Im not a
country artist. Acuuf -Rose studios is where The Everly Brothers recorded all their hits. At the time in the
70s when I was recording in Nashville, I was actually living in St. Louis, Mo singing lead for Bob Kuban &
The Inmen whose 1966 recording of The Cheater went # 1 worldwide and is now in the Rock & Roll Hall Of
Fame as well as being a huge Carolina Beach Music Classic.....JD Cash

To Brandy From WENDELL NC, FYI, Down At Myrtle Beach was written & copywtrited as a derivitive of a song
call BUCKHEAD BEACH which was originally recorded by THE Original Embers with Jackie Gore. Johnny Barker
produced the record for me and it was placed on my SUMMERPLACE CD as a tribute to My Favorite Summerplace
which is Myrtle Beach and also as a tribute to one of my all time favorite singers, Jackie Gore. There was
also a version of the song called At Virginia Beach recorded by the late Bill Deal.

Greetings, No Im not a country artist and Im not related to Johnny Cash. Im currently DJing at 2001 but
recorded and traveled with bands for well over 30 years. I still perform at many private functions every year
but have no desire to hit the road again. 30 years was enough. I was signed to GRT Records in Nashville in
1976 but that doesnt mean Im a Country artist. GRT also had offices in Los Angeles. I dont claim to be an
expert, George, but Ive certainly recorded my share of songs over the years. In 1983, I was 1984 I was Vice
Pesident Of The Beach Music Awards for three years before going to work for the late concert promoter, Cecil
Corbett. We did shows with acts such as Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Bruce
Springstein just to mention a few, so I believe I have a little knowledge of the music business. As to the
term , Bubble Gum Beach Music. This is a term the Shaggers gave to real Carolina Beach Music as many of them
prefer to call County, Boogie, Blues & Old SOUL MUSIC - Beach Music. They dance to a variety of music and
call it all Beach Music which just isnt the case. It has really confused the world as to what Beach Music
is.
The Shag is a Great Dance which can be done to all kinds of Music and Carolina Beach Music had a
distinctive sound in the 60s & 70s & 80s and belongs to the Carolinas. It was a happy positive music !
Not all Beach Music was made for shagging. There are alot of Classic Slow Beach Music songs also. The Shag is
a Dance and Beach Music is an artform of music which belongs to the Carolinas. Believe It or Not !

Jim Quick writes:
Third, "Callin'" is not a cover tune.

Cashbox magazine writes:
The CD
contains two songs written by nationally renowned rockin’ blues guitarist Tinsley Ellis (Callin’ and Somebody)
– not only did the band cover the tunes but they also got Tinsley to perform on them!

Reading the review is
why I thought one of the 2 songs I like on Sneakin` record was a cover.

After reading so many comments posted regarding Coastline, I have a question. Are people voting for
them
because they are talented, because they like the type of music they play, or because they love Jim
Quick?
I'm not that familiar with them (I'll admit I'm not crazy about their
"style", so
what I have heard more than not is that they promote beach music, although it's
not necessarily their
venue.

Nice discussion... Barbara and Ruth Ann

Ruth Anne, you're too funny! I just wish these bands that are getting more into that country
"twang" and away from beach would try it out in the country arena. If they're good enough, the
country music fans will embrace them.

Hey Barbara,

I think you hit the nail on the head . People vote for Coastline because they are
talented, love their music and love Jim Quick and the rest of the group too. I'm not sure that it's
entirely the case that they are being pushed into beach music. I think it's more that beach music is
embracing them and welcoming them in.

As far as the country thing,I most definately understand where
you're coming from . All my life when I would hear some "twang" it was like fingers on the
chalkboard.Just hate country music. For the last ten years it's been an area of contention between me and
my husband . He likes it , I don't. He dials it in, I cringe, I criticise it, he retaliates,we argue.
Which is okay 'cause sometimes it also involves make up sex an gifts. Anyway, over the past few months
I've been to several Holiday Band shows and what did they do but play 2 popular country songs that
normally I hate !!! But lo and behold I looked down and OMG my toes were tappin' and and Lord have mercy
my hands were clappin' and I almost went for the fist pump to the air !!!I looked over and hubby
hadn't seen so I reigned it all in real quick (you know ,the gift thing and all). But I learnrd something
that day .... never say never .... any given day, any band, any song, you never know when something might
stir something you didn't know was there.

The Craig Woolard Band is phenominal !!! I am a Coastline Crazy but I'm also a Craig Woolard.... Wacko
??? Whatever the term might be. And I feel the same about some other bands and individule artists for that
matter. It came together for Coastline this year. They earned it, they deserved it and they got it. Does that
mean others didn't earn it or deserve it ? Absolutely Not !!! Not every one can win. Yeah, Coastline won
big , and I say , Coastline, savor it !! taste it, swish it around on your tongue , hell, just get down and
roll in it (okay I know you already have).

And as for Craig Wollard band being "shafted"
... I would never assume so much to speak for anyone else but IMHO Craig Woolard probably wouldn't use
that term (and I know you never said he did). But you may have inadvertently took something away from Craig,
which I don 't think was your intent. Craig Woolard has already been in those shoes.... he knows what it
felt like. Disaappointed ?? Yeah, he's human, but honoring someone else is not a dishonor to you and I
don 't think "shafted " was in his thoughts.
