Its many of the locals who are partly responsible for problems that Dynamites had!!How about this scenario,
Go somewhere cheap to eat,get to Dynamites just in time to watch some great entertainment(for free), drink
water, or maybe 1 drink or beer, leave early because its crowded and they want to get on home to watch Matlock
reruns, then call and complain about the noise level at Dynamites so the police come and make them close
early. Yep, theres some of your locals!!
LOL...this is funny and probably true in some cases. A lot of these old shaggers can`t drink and party like they used to but they sure did their fair share when they were younger. If Dynamites were a country or hip hop joint they would probably still be open and the folks would whine that it wasn`t a shag place. |

Butch,I'm not stepping on only those toes in M.B.area but those up here in Charlotte and where ever the shag shoe fits! Its widely known that a certain % of shaggers are not only cheap ,they are so tight they squeak when they walk. Many in that group couldn't care less if Bands had anywhere to play at all. All they really want is a blues Dee Jay and a tall glass of water!!!!! |

This duke guy (?) doesn't care whose face he slaps, does he? I wonder how many beach music shows he attends in Charlotte. He basically calls all the folks in the MB area tight and old! At least you folks should feel safe in MB, he has to put up with living in Charlotte. And Barbara, as a die-hard Duke fan, please do not use his name in reference to the Blue Devils anymore. Thanks. |

Duke, I'm assuming a lot of people are sad to see Dynamites go, and yes, I'm sure they'll get over it, but let them vent for awhile. It's a loss to a lot of people, especially the locals.
With a name like Duke, I'm not surprised at your lack of empathy.

My wife and I too are sorry to see Dynamites close also. It was one of the few places you get a table, eat, drink, dance and enjoy a live band. I would not have had a problem paying a cover charge or having a minium if you sat at the table. I buy a season pass to 2001 every year. I would have been glad to do the same for Dynamites. Hopefully something new will open up in the area to replace it. |

Just checking in, listening to some great beach music...I am so shocked to hear that Dynamites is closing. That is a favorite place for me and my wife to go,do some shaggin and hear the great beach bands perform, and to see the crew of 94.9 This has got to be a sad day for me and others to learn of this. All I can say is thanks for all the memories, It was a great place to spend, when your at the beach !! |

I was wondering if anyone on this message board knows if the beach music group, Coast to Coast, is planning on releasing a CD? I really like their music, and was hoping to find some of their music to purchase. Thanks! |

Jay, you can also call Earwax Records, here in Atlanta. Their number is 404/875-5600. I have ordered CDs from them. Judy's is where I would start, but sometimes they don't have or can't get some things. I've ordered "Shake a Tail Feater" by James and Bobby Purify and Mary Wells, "Greatest Hits" from them. I don't know how much actual "beach" music they can get, but I do know you can get a lot of R&B oldies from them. Just another avenue if you run into a problem at Judy's. |

My suggestion is: Judy's House of Oldies. Check out her website. If it's beach music, R&B, and oldies...she has it, or can get it. One stop shopping. |

Where can I purchase alot of the new beach music. Is their a website? The last thing I purchased was Beach Music Anthology Vol. 1 in 1996. When I ask about Carolina Beach Music anywhere around here, they look dumbfounded. We need to show the people up here that Carolina Beach Music rules. Beach Music isn't all about The Beach Boys & Jan & Dean. |

I would like to thank Joy Thomas for the very kind words she said about the Carousels and my singing of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." We have been performing for more than 30 years and like all the bands out there, the excitement comes from the fine folks we play for. Most bands are not getting rich playing... I fact the true is we are lucky to break even after all the expenses. That's not why we do it. We do it for the love of the music and making just one person smile while performing. Alice has been a long time fan and friend of ours and we truly love her and wish her the very best in her battle against cancer. Being a cancer survivor myself, I understand her feelings and all she is going through. My dream is one day this disease will be gone.
I thank all the bands performing to keep Beach Music alive. There's more Beach Music bands today than ever and that's a great thing for the public because with each new song written, Beach Music lives on.
Thanks again and I hope when Joy said I made them cry, it was for the right reasons... ha ha

Bonnie, we thought about that a few years ago when Charlie and Jackie were still living here and teaching. Atlanta is so different from Columbia, or other smaller towns in the Carolinas. The few places that are available are quite expensive, and you just don't have the "shag" following here. Too many people from places other than the Carolinas. |

Hi Joy, just read your article about Alice from Kinston. If you ever see her again tell her that there is hope and don't ever give up. I have just gone thru stage 4 lung cancer and am now "cancer free"
Keep the music playing wide ass open and enjoy each day as never before. I have my lap top in my truck with muliple speakers and an air card so I can listen to 94.9 all day long.
I swear I think a heavy beat of "one and two. three and four, five six beat the stuff out of me lol |

Y'all are right! We need the clubs! I was so disappointed to read about Dynamite's closing. I heard the ads on The Surf and when we came to the beach last year, we went every time and enjoyed it.
We have a private beach music group in the Columbia area that is renting a catering hall for dances. We pay a very reasonable cover charge and bring our own "refreshments". The DJs play the old and new beach music tunes.
Barbara, maybe this is what y'all can do in Atlanta.
I listen to The Surf when I'm at home. If y'all go on satellite radio, I'll buy it. It would be great to listen to The Surf while I'm at work and in the car!

Billy, you're right about shaggers not spending in places. Shag Atlanta has had problems for years finding places to dance and sponsor shag lessons because the people don't want to spend any money. Places cannot stay open by your presence alone. I've seen it happen too often here. Beer and wine sales will do just fine if you don't want to drink anything stronger. |

Yeah...if you tightwads gonna come to these clubs and dance....you need to dance over to the bars and buy some BEER or more of these beach clubs gonna be torn down for condos.
THEN you can come to the beach and listen to the SURF and dance in those condos you rent because there won`t be any beach clubs to go to. ....and tip the band and bar folks too |

I heard that when he bought it he knew it was a money loser, but he had to keep it operating for a certain amount of time.
Time is up now and he`s gonna tear it down and build condos is the rumor.
It was fun while it lasted and he provided a nice place to go and great memories. |
