MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11.

The tradition of honoring mothers dates back to ancient Greece. In the United States, credit for the holiday as we know it today is given to two women. In 1870, Julia Ward Howe who wrote "Battle Hymn of the Republic" led a campaign to end war and celebrate peace and motherhood. In 1908, Anna Jarvis honored her mother who had died the previous year by handing out carnations (her mother’s favorite flower) to all mothers in her church in Grafton, West Virginia. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as a national day to celebrate mothers who had lost sons in the war.

THE CLIFF & CAROLYN ELLIS FOUNDATION AND FUNDRAISER

Cliff Ellis, Men’s Basketball Coach at CCU, and his wife Carolyn have established a foundation to aid students in Horry and Georgetown counties in their educational goals.

The Cliff and Carolyn Ellis Foundation was chartered as a 501©3 non-profit, tax exempt organization in 2007.

The emphasis of their mission is on school preparedness. Statistics show that 1 out of 7 children are lacking in basic skills when they start school in our area. They are at an immediate disadvantage before they even get started. One probable cause for this is the high number of single parents acting as head of household. These working mothers (and certainly fathers, in some cases) are struggling to provide the basics for their children…food, shelter, and clothing…and often don’t have the time or skills to teach their kids the basics of learning that they need.

SPRING SAFARI 2008

It’s time for the grandest of all adult spring breaks to hit Ocean Drive…SOS Spring Safari!

Area clubs and dance floors will once again be filled with shaggers and friends happy to be reunited. Whether your favorite tunes are from the 40’s or today’s "new beach music," there will be something for you.

When packing for your trip, don’t forget to throw in your slightly used but no longer in use shag shoes. Drop them off at the Surf studio at 429 Pine Avenue so that they can be "recycled" to a junior shagger! After all, one of the reasons for SOS is to perpetuate this dance and music we love.
