A Story of a Golfer's Travels

Hal Wallace and Tom Cooke
Hal Wallace and Tom Cooke
Many friendships have been made on the golf course. This is a story of a group of golfers who met in 1997 and now are meeting again for the 11th straight year for a fascinating tournament. The story begins at the Long Bay Golf Club in Longs, SC and travels across the Atlantic to England and Ireland.

In 1997 a group of eight golfers from England contacted Long Bay to see if they could play at their course while vacationing in Myrtle Beach. They were interested in a one-day match and needed eight players from Long Bay to meet their challenge. When word spread, a team was quickly formed and plans were solidified. The tournament resulted in a win for England. It was so much fun that the teams made plans to do it again the next year.

Heritage Shores Nature Preserve

North Myrtle Beach touts a new city park named HERITAGE SHORES NATURE PRESERVE. Located near 53rd Avenue in Cherry Grove (where the public boat ramp is located), the nature trail offers a quiet peek at the flora and fauna that is indigenous to the area.

This maritime forest provides a protective buffer between the mainland and the sea. It also reduces wind speed, slows rising waters, and absorbs pollutants. A wide variety of plants, animals, birds, and fish make their home in this sanctuary. Stroll along the designated walkways (some planked, others left in natural sand) and docks, and you will come across well-placed signs displaying the different species of life. Blue Crab, Belted Kingfisher, Gray and/or Red Fox, Heron, White-tailed Deer, Broadhead Skink, Salt Marsh Skipper, Great Egret, Oyster, and White Ibis are but a sampling of nature’s children that make their home here. Trees that can be found in the park include Live Oak, Palmetto, Cedar, Bay, Hackberry, Groundsel, Yaupon Holly, and Wax Myrtle.

Camp Kemo Fundraiser

The last Sunday of SOS has become synonymous with Fat Harold’s Camp Kemo fundraiser. This year marks the 25th year that Harold has done this, but his involvement with the camp goes back even further. In 1980 a group of doctors and nurses in Columbia hosted an event to raise money for a camp for children who were being treated for cancer at Palmetto Health Richland. Harold attended the fundraiser and took an immediate interest in the success of the program. That year, 45 children attended a day camp intended to provide an outing of fun.

In 1982, Harold began his now-famous fundraiser at the beach in his club. The money he has raised has greatly contributed to the success of the camp. The  $500.cost per camper is paid for by donations, and this year there are already 130 campers signed up for the weeklong overnight adventure. Harold visits the camp on “Visitor’s Day” each year to meet and mingle with the children. He laughingly recalls a camper running up to him, exclaiming, “Thank you, Mr. Fat Harold! Because of you, I got to come to camp and get away from my mean brother at home!”  Actually, the campers can bring a sibling or best friend with them to camp. This little guy must have chosen the friend!
