Coastal Carolina Pep Rally Ohhhhhhhh…what a splendid afternoon to have a pep rally! One could match their pulse to the percussion of the Drumline pep band as they marched out, filling the crowd with anticipation. The cheerleaders followed in typical fashion, waving their pompoms and chanting “GO CHANTICLEERS!”, urging all to join in. Gary Brown, local award- winning beach music artist, wowed the crowd in singing the national anthem. And then the moment came for what the celebration was all about…the 2006 CCU football team ran out as if it was the opening football game. Anticipation filled the air!
It wasn’t the Brooks Stadium at CCU, nor the visiting team’s home turf. It was Dynamite’s at Dock Holidays huge outdoor space that was the arena of the day. Sweltering temperatures did little to quell the excitement. Cameras flashed, crowds stood 3 deep to get a better view, and college football was what was happening! It was August 28, and the Chanticleers made many new acquaintances and fans. The Grand Strand is filled with folks from all over the United States, and world, for that matter. Most residents have their own team or college to support; but it was wonderful to see that they had decided to pull for their local team. The pep rally was largely the brain child of Mark Roach from CCU and Cindy Collins, marketing director for Dynamite’s, a popular spot for locals and visitors. Situated on the Intracoastal Waterway in North Myrtle Beach, Dynamite’s boasts the largest outdoor space in the area. Owner Kenneth McDonald graciously offered not only his facility, but a VIP cocktail party (tailgate party!) as well, aboard “The Dream”, his luxury yacht docked just feet way. A buffet was served, and you should’ve seen the portions eaten by the team!! Dignitaries from CCU were on hand to meet and greet everyone. Diane Gunnin and Elaine Bridges thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality, as well as Danny Nicholson, VP for Advancement, Mark Roach, Senior Associate Athletic Director, Dr Ron Ingle, President of CCU, Matt Hogue, Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations, Warren “Moose” Koegel, Athletic Director, and last but not least Coach Dave Bennett. It is hard to believe the football program is only in its 4th year. They already have an impressive track record, with season ends boasting 6-5, 9-2, and 10-1.The Chanticleers are ranked in the top 25 in several polls as this season begins. Dr Ron Ingle, who will retire in June, 2007, has led CCU for 14 years through its evolving prominence from part of the SC University system to an independent institution. A native of Moncks Corner, he resides in Murrells Inlet with his wife, Judy, and plans to stay in this area. No doubt he will continue cheering on his team! “Moose”, who played football under Joe Paterno’s leadership at Penn State, is proud of the fact that this year’s football team will have some senior members. They are building their rich history one year at a time. He was recruited from University of Tennessee to start the football program at CCU from conception. All agree that he has done a stellar job! Coach Bennett effused about the support his team was given at the pep rally. “This community, and North Myrtle Beach in particular, has been wonderful! Wouldn’t it be great to have this as a yearly event?! This support really motivates our players!” Harvey and Selene Graham, owners of 94.9 the Surf, are enthusiastic fans of the Clemson Tigers. They also recognize how important local backing can be for any school and team. The 40 foot bell tower on the CCU campus is named in honor of the late Harvey Graham, Sr. 94.9 the Surf is proud to join team mascot Chauncey in cheering for the Chanticleers! |
