Heritage Shores Nature Preserve North Myrtle Beach touts a new city park named HERITAGE SHORES NATURE PRESERVE. Located near 53rd Avenue in Cherry Grove (where the public boat ramp is located), the nature trail offers a quiet peek at the flora and fauna that is indigenous to the area. This maritime forest provides a protective buffer between the mainland and the sea. It also reduces wind speed, slows rising waters, and absorbs pollutants. A wide variety of plants, animals, birds, and fish make their home in this sanctuary. Stroll along the designated walkways (some planked, others left in natural sand) and docks, and you will come across well-placed signs displaying the different species of life. Blue Crab, Belted Kingfisher, Gray and/or Red Fox, Heron, White-tailed Deer, Broadhead Skink, Salt Marsh Skipper, Great Egret, Oyster, and White Ibis are but a sampling of nature’s children that make their home here. Trees that can be found in the park include Live Oak, Palmetto, Cedar, Bay, Hackberry, Groundsel, Yaupon Holly, and Wax Myrtle.
There are several creek and marsh docks located in the park, as well as inviting benches and picnic shelters. The trail is ¾ mile long and offers a serenity that is hard to find in our bustling resort. Dogs are only permitted on leashes, and no fishing or crabbing is allowed from the docks. This is a walking trail…no golf carts or bicycles are allowed. The park is open from 7:00am – 8:00pm. Bathrooms and water are available at the boat ramp but cannot be found on the trail. Obey the entrance sign that says to be careful at unusually high tide, or you may find yourself unable to maneuver well enough to find your way out. Grab your camera, a good book, a dear friend, and enjoy this treat! If you are a nature lover, it’s a must that you see HERITAGE SHORES NATURE PRESERVE. If you like exploring and experiencing different activities, add this to your list. Thank you, North Myrtle Beach, for this gift to the community! |
