Get ready, ‘cause here they come!

Get ready, ‘cause here they come!

Junior Shaggers will be in North Myrtle Beach (O.D.) for Junior SOS July 18 – 22. Local clubs, including Boulevard Grill, Ducks, Fat Harold’s, and the OD Arcade, are opening their doors and hearts to these kids (under 21) and their families to ensure a good time will be had by all.

Ron Alexander was instrumental in organizing the first informal SOS for kids in 1992. The afternoon event took place at Smiley’s, a popular shag club in Charlotte. His son, who started shagging at age 8, and his friends were obviously too young to participate in SOS. The idea was to let them have a place to have fun, dance, and meet new friends; while also promoting and generating interest in beach music and shag dancing. The day was so successful, and a new yearly tradition took form. The group moved to O.D. in 1995. Ron says last year between 300 and 400 people participated at some point during Junior SOS. “ This week gives our young dancers an opportunity to get together in large numbers and form friendships that will last a lifetime,” he says. Not at all unlike regular SOS!

The Junior Shag Association (JSA) is run by a board of directors. Keith Dallas, President, got involved when his son received shag lessons for Christmas from his grandmother. It turned into a wonderful experience for his entire family. He explains that the kids who are involved with Junior SOS have an extended family of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many volunteers to provide safety and comfort. First-timers, some as young as six years old, are exposed to the music, dance, and camaraderie. Keith says,“As President, I am really excited about the upcoming week. We hope everyone will come out and see these kids. We think you’ll be surprised at their talent.” Based on last year’s Junior SOS, there were 227 junior members, 99 adult members, 20 corporate members, and 8 sponsor members, for a total of 354 members of JSA.

Lacie Priest, 17 year-old daughter of Freddie and Terrie Priest from Whiteville, has been attending Junior SOS with her brother Evan, for five years. “ Now I can understand why my parents like going to SOS. Junior SOS is the same for us. You meet other kids who like the same things you do…shagging, the music, and of course the beach. My favorite part is watching the junior dance contests!”

Activities include an exhibition at Myrtle Beach Manor Assisted Living Home, kick-off party at Fat Harold’s, Battle of the Sexes Line Dance Challenge, dancing at Ducks, organized beach activities, reception and tour of 94.9 the Surf, various dance contests, workshops galore, and a Gospel Hour and brunch on Sunday. For a full list of activities and specific times, visit www.juniorshaggers.com.

94.9 the Surf welcomes the next generation to the beach and wishes a wonderful experience for all involved!
