Becky Stowe Becky Stowe is as charming and lovely as her color palette. Thousands of people have enjoyed her wonderful renditions of beach memorabilia on the cover of THE SOS CAREFREE TIMES, the official magazine of SOS. Many have purchased her limited edition prints of these covers and hold them in a coveted place of honor. This year marks her 20th year of designing and drawing these popular prints. In the fall of 1987, Becky collaborated with Swink Laughter (founder of SOS) to produce her first cover. They sold so well she had to produce more prints to fill the orders! The same thing happened the next year!
The rest is history…the cover and prints have been eagerly anticipated and ordered each year. This year, as earlier stated, marks Becky’s 20th anniversary! In order to show her gratitude to her many customers, friends, employees, and family; and to celebrate this milestone, Becky is hosting a celebratory party on Saturday, September 15 (the first weekend of SOS) at Pirate’s Cove at 205 Main Street from 2 – 6 pm. Everyone is invited… Bobby Smith and the Poor Souls will be on hand as well as refreshments and door prizes. Becky was born in Belmont, NC but was actually raised in Salisbury. Her artistic abilities sufficed her well even then as she designed the ads and “dressed the windows” at Zimmerman’s Department Store in Salisbury. She grew up vacationing with her family at “OD” and continued the tradition as a teenager. She always wanted to move the area; and as many have done, she realized her dream in 1982. She worked for THE SUN NEWS the first few years while also freelancing to design logos and ads. She opened BEACH MEMORIES on Main Street in 1989, a darling shop which showcases her artwork as well as many other unique gift items and beach and shag memorabilia. Becky married local businessman Milford Powell in 1991. Author Susan McMillan will be at BEACH MEMORIES on September 22 from 2 – 4pm for a book signing to promote her now famous postcards of America series. If you’ve never visited BEACH MEMORIES, you are in for a real treat! Becky is the recipient of many awards. In 1993 she was named “Official Artist in Residence for the Society of Stranders.” She received a Cammy Industry Appreciation Award in 1996. In 2000 Becky was awarded “The SOS Chairman’s Lifetime Achievement Award,” and became a Sand Flea Honorary Living Legend in 2001. While it is nice to be recognized for her talents, Becky’s real joy comes from her creations. 94.9 the Surf commends Becky for her talents and for sharing them with so many. She is a delightful asset to our community, and she certainly keeps beach memories alive for all of us! |
