The Shoe Drive for Junior Shaggers

The Shoe Drive for Junior Shaggers

THE SHOE DRIVE FOR JUNIOR SHAGGERS is the brainchild of legendary Ellen Taylor. Ellen has been a shag instructor for years and believes strongly in supporting the junior shaggers. After a workshop during Junior SOS in 2006, Ellen overheard several young girls expressing their desire to have some "real" shag shoes, the kind they saw the older girls wearing. Ellen’s thoughts immediately went to all the dance shoes that must be hanging around, no longer being used, in the closets of many dancers. After checking with some friends, the idea was born to collect these shoes, clean them up, and recycle them to juniors. Word spread and the program took off! Shoes have been given out at various events held by junior shaggers, and it has been delightful for all involved…from the donors to the recipients. Donations are accepted at the SOS store (beside OD Arcade and Lounge on Main Street) during shag events, such as SOS, Midwinter, Junior SOS, etc.

94.9 the Surf, the Official Radio Station of Junior SOS and a strong supporter of our young dancers, has agreed to be a drop-off location for these dance shoes. We’re asking everyone to clean out their closets and bring us those shoes that are no longer worn. This is a very tangible way to encourage and promote the next generation of beach music and shag enthusiasts! Judy Britt of Shag Atlanta Shag Club said, "Hopefully these shoes can keep dancing through a junior shagger!" Please remember that there is a need for shoes for gals AND guys…but, PLEASE, no sneakers, boots, etc…dance shoes only!

94.9 the Surf is located at 429 Pine Avenue, one block off Main Street (turn onto Pine) in the Ocean Drive section of North Myrtle Beach. Drop-off hours are 9am – 5pm, Monday through Friday.

"The juniors are the future of the dance and the music, and our goal is to offer every opportunity possible to see that this continues," Ellen effuses. 94.9 The Surf applauds this effort and is pleased to support it!
