VALENTINE’S DAYHave you ever wondered just WHO this guy was that started all this…Saint Valentine? According to ancient history, Valentine was a martyred saint from Rome who died on February 14, 269 A.D. The story goes that he left a note to his beloved to be delivered upon his death that read "from your Valentine." Thus he became known as the "Patron Saint of Lovers". The tradition of sending Valentine cards was introduced in the United States in 1880. Today it is the second largest day for sending cards, second only to Christmas. The tradition has blossomed to include candy, flowers, hearts, jewelry, candle-lit dinners, and romantic music. It is a holiday that many look forward to, while others, perhaps without a partner, dread. Who says it must be reserved for only romantically paired lovers? Love exists in many other forms…between parent and child, among friends, with pets, nature, our country, etc…the list is endless! Who can forget the excitement in school of decorating a box (most often a shoe box) with a slit in the top and delivering a card to each and every member of the classroom? It was stressed that no one was to be left out. Remember how good it felt to go home and read each and every one? What about the joy that comes when a child makes his/her own card from red construction paper, white doilies, and Elmer’s glue and prints a personal message to their parents? Maybe these treasured memories and mementos should remind us that the holiday is, after all, simply an opportunity to let someone know they are special to us. As beautiful as commercial cards are today, a hand-written love letter is undoubtedly the best!! "LOVE" is the most common topic of songs. Everyone has his favorite song for very specific reasons.
