Heeey Baby Days Road Show Reunions are always special…whether a high school reunion, college reunion, military reunion, family reunion, etc. The longer it has been since the last reunion is a major contributing factor in the success of the present one. It is common knowledge among those of us who have loved “beach music” since the 60’s that a small dot of land in central North Carolina called Burlington was home to many, many bands. Some of these musicians have continued their musical careers, while others have retired and/or found other vocations. The majority of these artists were teenagers at the time. Perhaps what distinguishes them from other “garage bands” across the nation was that they actually recorded their sessions and produced 45’s and albums.
A reunion of these Burlington, NC (and nearby) bands and musicians was held on Sunday, December 17 at the Ramada Inn in Burlington. Named the “ Heeey Baby Days Road Show” in regard to Greg Haynes newly published book, people came from far and wide to show homage to their first, perhaps, musical influences. The Casuals, The Fabulous Five, The In-Men Ltd, The Monzas, The Alpacas, Black and Blue, The Attractions, the Kallabash Corporation, Shaggie Maggie, and Impacts were all on hand (some in partial lineup) to entertain the hundreds of fans. Special recognition was given to Don Moore of Don Moore Music, who had sold many of these artists their first instrument. Paul Craver awarded a trophy signifying Carolina Beach Music Legend to Ted Keaton, former member of Kallabash Corporation and current keyboard player for Shaggie Maggie. Ted is retiring January 1 after 40 years in the industry. Story has it that the house erupted in cheers and tears during this very special reunion. It was indeed a night to remember! |
